EcoRomania was born in 2008 from the vision of Dr. Mihai Popescu, a conservation biologist who witnessed firsthand the rapid changes affecting Romania's pristine natural landscapes. After spending a decade studying biodiversity in Western Europe, Dr. Popescu returned to his homeland with a determination to protect what he considered "Europe's last true wilderness."
Beginning with just three staff members and operating from a small office in Bucharest, the organization initially focused on documenting endangered species in the Carpathian Mountains. What started as a scientific research initiative quickly evolved as the team recognized that lasting conservation required engaging local communities and developing sustainable economic alternatives.
By 2012, EcoRomania had expanded its mission to include eco-tourism development, working directly with rural villages to create experiences that would allow visitors to appreciate Romania's natural beauty while supporting conservation efforts. The organization pioneered the "Conservation through Community" approach, which has since been recognized internationally as a model for sustainable development in biodiversity hotspots.
Today, EcoRomania employs a diverse team of 28 conservationists, scientists, educators, and tourism specialists. We manage projects throughout Romania's key ecological regions, from the ancient forests of Transylvania to the unique wetlands of the Danube Delta. Our work has directly contributed to protecting over 50,000 hectares of critical habitat while supporting sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of families in rural communities.

"I've collaborated with conservation organizations across Europe, and EcoRomania stands out for their exceptional integration of scientific rigor with practical community engagement. Their approach to balancing human needs with ecosystem protection has created a model that many of us in the field are now studying and adapting."

"When EcoRomania first came to our village, many were skeptical. But they listened to our needs and concerns, and worked with us to develop tourism opportunities that respect our traditions. Now my guesthouse welcomes visitors from around the world, and my son has returned to the village to work as a guide instead of leaving for the city."
Local Entrepreneur, Bran Village
"Our guided expedition with EcoRomania transformed how we think about travel. Instead of simply seeing beautiful places, we learned about ecosystems, connected with local families, and even participated in a wildlife monitoring project. It was the most meaningful travel experience we've ever had, and we've been sharing it with everyone we know."
