Discover the Natural Harmony Between Humans and Environment in Romania's Pristine Ecosystems

About EcoRomania

Preserving Romania's Natural Heritage

EcoRomania was founded in 2008 with a clear mission: to showcase and preserve Romania's exceptional biodiversity while promoting sustainable coexistence between humans and nature. Our team of dedicated environmentalists, biologists, and tourism experts has created a unique approach to eco-tourism that emphasizes education, conservation, and authentic experiences.

Romania is home to the largest remaining virgin forests in Europe, with over 6,000 species of plants and more than 400 unique types of mammals, including the largest population of brown bears on the continent. Our work focuses on protecting these invaluable resources while creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

Through our guided tours, research expeditions, and community outreach programs, we've helped thousands of visitors and locals appreciate the delicate balance between development and conservation in the Carpathian Mountains, Danube Delta, and throughout Romania's diverse ecosystems.

Biodiversity Monitoring

Our team conducts extensive biodiversity assessments throughout Romania's diverse ecosystems. We use innovative techniques to track and monitor plant and animal species, creating comprehensive databases that help identify conservation priorities. These efforts have led to the discovery of several previously undocumented species and have provided critical data for national conservation policies.

Human-Nature Interaction Studies

Understanding the complex relationship between local communities and their natural environment is crucial for sustainable conservation. Our research examines traditional ecological knowledge, land use patterns, and the socioeconomic factors that influence conservation outcomes. By working closely with communities, we develop models that support both environmental protection and human well-being.

Climate Change Impact Assessment

Romania's diverse ecosystems are already showing signs of climate change impacts. Our long-term monitoring programs track shifts in species distribution, phenology changes, and ecosystem responses to changing temperature and precipitation patterns. This research provides essential data for developing adaptation strategies and conservation plans that account for future environmental conditions.

Carpathian Brown Bear Conservation

Romania hosts Europe's largest population of brown bears, a keystone species for forest ecosystems. Our comprehensive conservation program includes habitat protection, conflict mitigation with local communities, and scientific monitoring. We've established wildlife corridors, trained local rangers, and developed bear-friendly tourism practices that generate sustainable income for communities while minimizing disturbance to these magnificent animals.

Preserving Traditional Farming Practices

Romania's traditional agricultural methods have maintained biodiversity-rich landscapes for centuries. Our project documents these practices and helps farmers adapt them to modern challenges while preserving their ecological benefits. We connect farmers with markets that value sustainably produced goods, organize knowledge-sharing workshops, and advocate for policies that support small-scale ecological farming.

Danube Delta Restoration

The Danube Delta is Europe's largest wetland and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Our restoration initiatives focus on rehabilitating degraded wetlands, monitoring water quality, and developing sustainable fishing practices with local communities. The project has successfully reintroduced native fish species, improved breeding habitat for rare birds, and created new opportunities for eco-tourism that benefit delta residents.

Wildlife Corridor Network

Our advocacy and scientific research led to the establishment of Romania's first comprehensive wildlife corridor network, connecting fragmented habitats across the Carpathians. Since implementation, we've documented a 40% increase in wildlife movement between previously isolated areas, significantly improving genetic diversity among key species.

Sustainable Tourism Initiative

In partnership with five villages in the Maramureș region, we developed an eco-tourism program that has increased local income by 35% while reducing pressure on natural resources. The initiative preserves traditional crafts and architecture while providing authentic cultural experiences for visitors and sustainable livelihoods for residents.

"I was skeptical when EcoRomania first approached our village about their sustainable tourism initiative. But five years later, I can say it has transformed our community. Our traditional shepherding practices are now valued, my son has returned to the village for work, and we protect our mountains because we understand their true worth."
